So, soulmates? Soulmates. 

• Soulmate marks are still until you meet your mate, and then they dance on your skin
• The closer you are, they more they dance
• The bond isn’t instantaneous - you have to work at it, like anything that’s worth it 
• But once the bond is in place, you can feel your mate for the rest of your lives
• Lance is born with a mark - black and pleasing to the eye - which just means his mate is already around somewhere, older than him. 
• Which isn’t all that weird, happens all the time, no-one bats an eye, they’re all just happy to know that he has someone out there for him.
  
• But, when he’s nearly a year old, another mark appears. 
  
• Red, shaped almost like flames
• This IS weird. Not unheard of, but definitely weird. 
• Triad bonds are rare and sometimes cause problems, but he’s too young at that point to know that, he just likes the pretty marks right in the center of his chest, red and black and so vivid, even against his dark skin
• The two marks intertwine; one mark, the older mark, a delicately flowing thing that evokes calm and steadfastness, the other mark, the younger mark, an intricate fiery thing that evokes passion 
• Lance grows up in a big family, so having two marks doesn’t seem weird, he likes having people around and knowing that he’s got two mates to look forward to, and well, that just feels right, doesn’t it
• His parents make him keep it to himself at school, so he just gets into the habit of… not talking about it 
• The only people who know he’s part of a Triad for years are his family and officials who need to know
• Until he gets to the Garrison and meets Hunk and they get to talking
• Hunk has one mark, perfectly normal, excepts it’s kinda mixed colours, which is a little out of the ordinary 
• Pidge doesn’t talk about his mark at all 
• Lance is disappointed that he hasn’t met either of his soulmates and he’s SEVENTEEN, his parents had met when they were fifteen, his older brother met his at sixteen 
• He doesn’t meet Keith, only hears about him and his escapades as the hot shot bad boy pilot who could do no wrong
• Until he disappeared from the Garrison one day
• He doesn’t notice, at first, because of all the screaming and fighting and collecting Lions and dealing with suddenly living on an alien planet, in an alien ship, with new alien friends, but his marks have come to life 
• Both of the marks swirl together, dancing on his chest
• Which means they’re both nearby 
• Which means -
• Which means it has to be two of the four people he’s started sharing space with in the past week 
• Which means…
• (Keith and Shiro already know they’re soulmates 
• They met before the Kerberos mission
• But at the time, Keith had been too young and Shiro too tied to his work
• They hadn’t had the time to explore it, until now)
• Lance and Keith don’t take well to being soulmates at first 
• (Keith is surprised and sullen - his other mate is this arrogant, locquacious, over-active, self-asserted ‘rival’?
• His two marks had kept him comforted throughout his childhood, knowing that even if he didn’t have anyone at the time, he was destined to have TWO someones to love him and keep him safe
• And one of them turns out to be this???)
• There are many disagreements and heated words
• Turns out, the red one is Keith’s, the black one is Shiro’s
• And isn’t that something? 
• Red lion, Black lion
• Lance laughs until Hunk has to hold him up and Pidge just snorts
• Shiro, four years older than the both of them, is the calming presence they both need - he keeps them grounded, his steady presence calms them down when they aggravate each other too much 
• Lance ends up going to Shiro first, upset and tired and lonely
• He confesses that he’s been looking forward to finding his mates for years, that he’s always loved that there were two of them, he comes from a big family, all noise and chatter and energy, but also comfort and love and help offered without thought, all of it from so many different people in so many different ways
• He wanted that with his soulmates 
• But his rivalry with Keith - or what he now knows to be an assumption about Keith, a fantasy rival created on the backs of the rumors and his legacy at the garrison - is hurting it
• He feels like he’s fucked everything up before they even got the chance to explore the bond 
• And Shiro, ever the steady, cam and thoughtful leader, just smiles and tells him it will all work out
• Tells him he just needs to go to Keith, the same way he came to him
• So he does 
• It’s takes time, but they get there, finally able to be in each other’s presence without arguing 
• Except in the teasing, friendly way that makes Pidge gag and Coran coo
• Shiro is happier, Keith is less reckless, Lance feels the loneliness ebb away bit by bit
• And the whole time, their marks dance and swirl in the centers of their chests 
• Until the wormhole 
• …
• Lance wakes up alone
• His marks are still
• There’s nothing in soulmate lore that says you get to keep them once you find them…

• lance and shiro are banned from several booths
• not because they cheat but because the booths are obviously rigged and they still manage to win a lot
• keith is actually so bad at carnival games but mostly cause he’s got bad luck and is easily frustrated
  
• but he’s the best of all of them at not falling on his ass inside those fun houses with moving floors and rotating rooms he’s got that shit on lock
  
• lance wins them prizes at the aiming/shooter games
  
• shiro wins them prizes at the strength testing games
  
• every time shiro is looking cool af after winning a strength testing game lance squeals and jumps into his arms dramatically proclaiming “MY HERO <3”
• keith rolls his eyes at them but snaps a photo because he’s a cheese like that
• cotton candy kisses
• lance loves the sweet taste
• keith doesn’t like the stickiness on his cheeks but he tolerates it cause he loves them
• plus they litter his cheeks with kisses and it tickles so it makes him giggle
• keith and lance use roller coasters and rides for competition
• first to say uncle has to wear the silly hat
• said hat is the only prize keith managed to win by randomly picking a rubber duck with a star on the bottom (only luck he had all day)
• shiro likes roller coasters but there’s no Thrill in them for him
• but it’s cute to see lance and keith scream-laughing and having fun
• lance names a cute little black dog plushie keith and keith blushes
  
• shiro names this cute little smug looking tabby cat plushie lance and lance dIES
  
• lance and keith holding shiro’s hands and guiding him to open spaces when he’s feeling too claustrophobic cause of crowds
  
• lance taking so many selfies with them both
  
• so many
  
• they all have things theyre bad and good at but they all have fun
• until the haunted house
• lance is super superstitious, and only agreed to go in cause he KNOWS it’s all people in costumes that aren’t actually messing with some bruja bullshit
• keith squints suspiciously at everything but is otherwise oddly calm
• shiro has died, his soul has left the building, his skin has gone  clammy and pale, he’s constantly stopping himself from making a tea kettle noise
• lance, clinging to shiro: youll protect me right babe
• shiro, edging further away: i cant read suddenly i dont know 
• keith: this is…a verbal conversation??? 
• [some noise sounds in the distance]
• shiro: [makes a tea kettle noise and fuckn bOLTS]
• lance: bABE NOOOOOO
• keith: don’t worry i can handle this
• [someone pops out at them]
• keith: [PULLS OUT HIS FUCKING KNIFE]
• lance: THIS IS NOT WHAT ID CALL HANDLING THIS
  
• they arrive at the jump scare
• shiro: gone
  
• keith: handling
• knife: out
• they are forcefully removed from the haunted house
• in the end they have to leave a bit before the carnival closes or else the cops risk getting involved aka: best carnival date EVER
